Happening is a small project run by one person. This page explains what we collect and what we do with it, in plain terms.
What we collect
Your email address, when you sign in. Your phone number, if you sign up for text updates. Your name, and a short bio if you write one, when you set up your account. The searches you run, the events you RSVP to, and the events you submit while signed in. Ordinary server logs, which record requests to the service.
How we use it
To run your account and sign you in, to return search results worth reading, to credit the events you submit, and to keep the service working and free of abuse.
Who we share it with
Service providers who host the database, send the login emails, and help rank search results. They handle this data on our behalf and for no other purpose. We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and there is no analytics or tracking on this site.
Text messages
If you opt in to text updates, we text you about upcoming events, about one message a week. We also text one-time verification codes when you sign in. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to stop, or HELP for help.
Your mobile phone number and your text-messaging opt-in are never shared with or sold to third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. They are used only to send you the messages described above, through the provider that delivers them on our behalf.
Cookies
None for tracking. The only thing we store in your browser is your login session, so you stay signed in.
How long we keep it
Your account details, the searches you run, and the events you RSVP to are kept for as long as your account is open. Searches are load-bearing, not just history: we count recent ones to enforce the rate limits that keep the service usable for everyone.
There is no automatic deletion schedule. This is a small project, and data is retained indefinitely unless you ask us to remove it. When we do remove something, it can survive in encrypted database backups for up to 7 days before those expire. Events you submitted stay in the catalog, because the catalog is a shared record other people rely on.
Your data
You can close your account yourself at the bottom of your profile page — that removes your profile, RSVPs, follows and search history for good. Records of text-message consent, and the event listings themselves, are kept. Or email [email protected] to ask what we hold about you or to correct it.
